CAPE TOWN - Motorists and businesses have been warned that parking marshals will return to the Cape Town central business district, Claremont, and Newlands from next week.

As of November 29, the City will resume charging a tariff for the use of on-street parking bays in these areas “to ensure a turnover of bays for those visiting the area” .

Marshals were deployed in Sea Point on November 2 already, and will be deployed in Bellville by the end of March 2022.

Parking tariffs for Sea Point, the CBD and Claremont are R4.80 per 15 minutes.

Tariffs in Bellville and Newlands are R3.40 per 15 minutes.

“The management of parking was temporarily suspended since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year. Given the much-needed surge in economic activity and anticipated arrival of tourists and visitors over the festive season, the City is resuming management to ensure a turnover of bays in popular areas and where people do business,” the City said.

“This will benefit business owners because their clients need parking, and those who are looking for parking will also benefit because parking bays will not be hogged for hours on end by the same person.”

Motorists have been reminded that they need to pay for parking upfront to prevent a situation where motorists return to their vehicles and drive off before paying the marshal.

“The City is in the process of concluding a clamping protocol. Once finalised, repeat offenders who refuse to pay will have the wheels of their vehicles clamped. Fines for parking violations range between R300 and R1 000, depending on the violation.”

Motorists’ whose stay in the CBD is likely to exceed two hours have the option of using cheaper, long-stay parking specifically provided along Jan Smuts Street, Sir Lowry Road between Tennant and Darling Streets, DF Malan Street and Buitengracht.

The applicable tariffs along these streets are R30 for less than 4.5 hours and R50 for between 4.5 and nine hours.
