Police watchdog the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has launched a probe after a metro police officer allegedly shot dead a man and injured two other members of the public at Mfuleni police station yesterday.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said a case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation by the Mfuleni police as the officer was allegedly stabbed.

She said an Ipid death inquest case was launched by Ipid over the suspect’s death.

“We are investigating a case of shooting at the police station. It is alleged a metro police officer shot and killed a person in the charge office yesterday morning.”

Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the man entered the charge office, sat next to the metro member and then started to stab him with a knife.

“The metro member was stabbed in the arm and then shot the unknown man, approximately 25 years old.”

Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the City would co-operate to ensure the investigation was expedited. Two other members of the public sustained wounds, both to the right foot, as a result of ricocheting bullets.

One was treated at Tygerberg Hospital.
