A hotel, apartments, including retirement units and restaurants, are among the future development planned for Ratanga

Junction.

The Rabie Property Group acquired the remaining land and associated rights to Century City in 2004 and said it would be redeveloped.

The park closed its doors on Tuesday. “That time has now come,” said Rabie Property Group spokesperson Maggie Rowley.

“Planning for the Ratanga redevelopment is continuing. While individual projects are still being finalised, the overall vision for the redevelopment of Ratanga remains that of a mixed use development comprising commercial, residential (including retirement) and hospitality/leisure components set around waterways and a public park.”

While the two rollercoasters, the Cobra and the Bushwacker, were sold to an operator who is planning to take them offshore, negotiations were still under way to relocate a number of the smaller rides to another venue close by.

Pamphlets distributed at the park during its last days stated a Ratanga family entertainment centre was set to launch at the Canal Walk Shopping centre later this year.

“We are also talking to some other people up country about relocating some of the other rides there. Once finalised we will be in a position to release details.” They are now in the process of decommissioning and removing the rides.

“A great deal of work will need to be done reconfiguring and servicing the Ratanga terrain to accommodate the planned 120000m² mixed use redevelopment before work can start.

“The redevelopment will take place over a number of years. The exact timing will depend on market demand.”

She added they were still going through the approval processes. “It is unlikely that we will announce any specific projects in detail before the end of the year.”
