Cape Town - Police are investigating a concealment of birth case after remains of a new-born baby were found by a passer-by on a field in Marikana informal settlement.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said no arrests have been made.

“Philippi East police are investigating a concealment of birth case opened after alleged human remains of a new-born baby were found by a passer-by on a field adjacent to Govan Mbeki Road, Klipfontein Mission Station, Wednesday morning,” said Van Wyk.

Marikana community activist Lizo Sikhundla said people in the townships need to familiarise themselves with orphanage organisations.

“This is a very sad incident. People need to consider the consequences before they react in whatever the situation. Whoever did this should have gone through with the birth and if they didn’t want to keep the baby, there are many organisations that take unwanted babies and are willing to raise them. Those kind of organisations are very helpful and people in townships need to familiarise themselves with them," said Sikhundla.

Community Police Forum (CPF) member Jongikhaya Ndletyana called for a swift arrest.

“The body was found by a dog but one of the residents who was just passing by saw the dog pulling a yellow plastic (bag) and out of curiosity the resident checked what was inside.

“Almost every two month we have bodies dumped on that field, it’s not something new to us, we are used to it,” said Ndletyana.
