Reward offered after DA councillor shot dead

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town has expressed shock and sadness following the murder of DA ward councillor Xolile Gwangxu in Philippi East on Wednesday night.

Gwangxu was shot dead after a meeting held at his office in a local community hall.

Safety and security Mayco member JP Smith said the City was offering a reward for any information that could to an arrest of the suspects

Smith said Gwangxu stayed behind after the meeting to lock up and someone came and shot him. He was found dead.

Police spokeserperon FC van Wyk said: "Circumstances about a shooting incident at about 8pm in front of Phillip East Community Hall in Ntloyiya Street, Phillipi East, where a man in his forties was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation. A murder case was opened for investigation."

Mayor Patricia de Lille’s spokesperson, Zara Nicholson, said: “It is terribly shocking. It is a great loss to the city and it’s people. He was a committed leader who worked tirelessly.

"The City wishes to extend its condolences to the family and friends. We will do everything in our power to make sure the perpetrators are brought to book.”
