SANParks warning to hikers after Lion’s Head fall

CAPE TOWN - Outdoor enthusiasts have been cautioned to remain aware of their surroundings as increasing visitor numbers are expected at parks and trails across the province over the coming weeks.

Recently, a 33-year-old woman was seriously injured after falling at least 10m while hiking Lion’s Head.

ER24 paramedics said when they arrived they were met by Metro Rescue, Life Healthcare and Wilderness Search and Rescue.

It took a team of eight people who went up the mountain to where the woman was lying.

The SANParks’s Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) encouraged visitors to never carry out an activity alone.

“The festive season is upon us and there will be increased recreational visitors to all sites. We are in fire season and ask that you be vigilant at all times.

Should you notice a fire anywhere on the mountain please call the TMNP emergency number at 086 110 6417 or 107 from a landline and 021 480 7700 from a mobile phone.”

Among some of the most popular spots to visit including Cape Point, Boulder’s Beach, Silvermine, Tokai, Oudekraal and Newland’s Picnic Site.

Additional aerial resources have also been deployed around the to TMNP, with SANParks saying it welcomed the deployment of the airbus H125 aircraft to support the Sea, Air and Mountain (Seam) Special Operations Ranger team and K9 unit.

“The Airbus H125 rotary-winged aircraft landed in Cape Town this week and set on its first flight in the Cape of Good Hope section of the park to support visitor safety and environmental crime prevention operations.

“Specially fitted equipment allows the chopper to provide real-time intelligence to ranger teams and K9 on the ground during visible patrolling.

“Following its early morning flight (Sunday) together with Seam rangers and K9, three poachers have been apprehended in the Cape of Good Hope section of TMNP.

“Thank you to the Seam Team rangers, K9 unit and the SANParks pilots for a spectacular job well done.

“The remainder of the Seam team have been deployed across the park to various locations in support visible policing operations during the festive season.”
