Cape Town – The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has lauded the conviction of serial puppy seller Christopher Van Rooyen on multiple charges of animal cruelty.

The organisation said he was found guilty in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday on ten charges of animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act. Van Rooyen was sentenced to a fine of R1500 or 30 days imprisonment on each count.

“In 2018, inspectors of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA laid various charges in two separate dockets against Van Rooyen for animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

“Members of the public also laid separate charges against Mr Van Rooyen for assault and animal cruelty,” the SPCA said.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspectors testified against Van Rooyen.

“The Cape of Good Hope SPCA would like to thank all the role players that played a vital role in getting Van Rooyen successfully convicted. We would like to thank the members of the public for reporting the matters, the South African Police Service and law enforcement for their swift action and response and Anti Animal Trafficking CT for their involvement.”

The NPA was not able to respond to questions by deadline.

The SPCA appealed to the public to help prevent the trade in puppies by reporting incidents to law enforcement on 021 596 1999 or the Cape of Good Hope SPCA on 021 700 4158/9
