The family of 32-year-old Thando Dlangamandla, of Marikana informal settlement in Philippi, believe he was killed for the money he earned through his spaza shop in the area.

His death on Saturday sparked fears among some residents, with a number of families moving out of the area.

Residents believed his murder signalled a flare-up of violence which last year saw 11 people shot dead in one day.

Yesterday, community leader Xolani Tukwayo told the Cape Times the death was a great loss to the community.

He said although the man they called Rasta had a small store, he assisted some residents in any way he could.

Tukwayo said the community had been tense since last month.

“We want to claim our streets back. We met the station commander and a new community committee of 16 people elected to assist the police.

"I am happy to see everyone is willing to work together to bring change. However, it seems we will do most of the job (needed).”

Dlangamandla’s mother, Nosimo, said she had always prayed for her son not to join any gang and die as a result.

“Not once have police come searching for him or community members come knocking to complain about him. I am a proud mother and happy to say he died trying to be the best father he can be to his 6-year-old daughter.”

She said police arrived at about 4pm on Saturday to inform them about the

shooting.

“He was also a young, promising and respected soccer player who travelled around the country, playing in places like Durban and Gauteng.

He won many medals.

"In his late twenties, he saw that his dream of becoming a soccer player was taking long and started a small business as he needed income. He never wanted to work for someone.”

She said her son will be buried in Lady Frere, in the Eastern Cape. The family has yet to decide on a date.
