CAPE TOWN - Police and community leaders were called to intervene on Saturday at about 53 voting registration sites that did not open on time due to service delivery protests.

“The bulk of the problems raised by the communities were related to service delivery. We assure voters that the minor glitches experienced on day one will be resolved by the morning (on Sunday). The process is expected to run even more smoothly for day two,” said Electoral Commission of SA spokesperson Kate Bapela.

The commission has called on potential voters who haven’t registered to do so on Sunday.

It said 488 670 voters had registered at their 23 151 voting stations. A further 29 000 voters were registered through the commission's online registration portal.

A total of 48 899 officials have been trained to carry out registration procedures at the voting stations.

Registrations will remain open up to the date of proclamation of the elections, which is expected to be on Monday.

“The commission applauds the thousands of South Africans who have gone online and visited our registration stations to register, re-register or check their details. The commission is also happy to report that more than 99 percent of our registration stations opened on time and remained operational,” said Bapela.

“We also remind potential voters that the online system, which captured 29 000 voters, will remain open until the date of proclamation of the elections, which we expect on Monday (September 20),” she said.
