A SUSPECT, arrested and released on bail three months ago, has once again found himself on the wrong side of the law.

Metro police K9 unit arrested a suspect for possession of drugs, with an estimated street value of R50 000, in the Edgemead area on Saturday.

The police officers were on a crime prevention patrol in Edgemead Drive, when they stopped a Green Toyota Corolla with a broken tail light.

When officers approached the vehicle, they smelled dagga. While searching the vehicle, officers discovered a plastic bag containing 61 units of rock cocaine.

The officers arrested the 31-year-old for the illegal possession of drugs and the suspect was detained at Bothasig SAPS.

It was later discovered that he was out on bail for a similar offence. He was arrested by the same unit three months ago.

“The arrest of a suspect, out on bail for the same offence, shows the blatant disregard for the law. The fact that the suspect was arrested for the second time, in just three months, shows that there are serious challenges in the criminal justice system.

“Our officers do their part in successfully arresting a suspect on a serious illegal drug offence and hand the suspect over to SAPS. The second part of a successful conviction relies on the criminal justice system to ensure that an effective investigation takes place to support a conviction,” said safety and security mayco member JP Smith.

“We hope that the challenges in the criminal justice system will be addressed, to avoid the cycle of repeat offenders engaging in criminal activity,” he said.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers detained a man coming from a well-known drug house in Hartenberg street, Leiden, in Delft, on Friday.

“When the suspect saw the officers, he wanted to get into a car which was standing opposite the drug house. Officers managed to apprehend the suspect and search of the suspect’s backpack revealed an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was arrested and taken to Delft SAPS,” said Smith.
