Cape Town – Western Cape pupils walked away triumphant at the National School Sports Winter Championship.

Cultural affairs and sports MEC, Anroux Marais, on Monday congratulated local athletes, coaches and support staff who competed at the National Championships and ended with a historic gold overall finish.

This year, the tournament was hosted over two legs: the first in the Western Cape chess, volleyball and netball fixtures between July 4 to 6. The remainder of the codes were played in Gauteng from July 11 to 16, after which Team Western Cape emerged the winners of the combined results from both legs.

The team consisted if 335 athletes, 27 managers, 31 coaches, 16 general management team members, a doctor and eight physiotherapists.

They achieved eight gold medals, seven silver, and three bronze, on their journey to taking the overall position as winners of the championship.

“This is the first time that our provincial team has brought home the gold, and we are so proud of each athlete and all the support staff who made this possible. This was the culmination of many hours of training and preparation, and I know that winning this gold place was a dream come true for many,” Marais said.

The Western Cape education department said they would continue supporting the athletes and support staff, who compete in these championships annually.
