Cape Town– Two men were shot dead in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain in what police said was a gang-related attack.

Their bodies were found in a field in Vancouver Road on Tuesday night.

Officers were alerted to the incident and attended the crime scene at about 11pm.

“Upon arrival at the crime scene, they found two unknown males lying on a field who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies.

“The suspect/s fled the scene and is unknown, and yet to be arrested. Both male victims, aged 32 and 49 years old respectively, were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“The motive for the attack is gang-related,” said police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi.

The recent spate of killings and the fact that police don’t seem to be making headway in identifying and arresting suspects was a sad state of affairs for the community, said community activist Nigel Williams.

“Mitchells Plain and its surroundings is known as one of the most violent areas in the country and it’s sad that we have people living here, elders, children, and other vulnerable groups.

“Four other people were just killed on Saturday in broad daylight and a few days later this incident happened, it almost feels like we are one of the forgotten communities because we had plans to meet with the police two weeks ago, the community gathered as planned and the same police who initiated that meeting didn’t show up, we stood there waiting for them for hours,” said Williams.

Williams said there was a disconnect between the community and police hence gang violence was rife because gang members had long ago noticed the gap.
