Cape Town – The body of an unidentified woman was found dumped in a rubbish bin in Old Crossroads, on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said police were investigating a case of murder. No arrests have been made.

“This morning (Monday) the body of an unidentified woman was found in a dirt bin at a premises in Sagwiti Street in Old Crossroads.

“According to reports, the people occupying the house heard a dirt bin being pushed on to their premises.

“They looked outside and saw a man pushing the bin.

“When they asked him what he was doing on their premises, he left the dirt bin and ran off. When the dirt bin was opened the body was found,” said Van Wyk.

Samora Machel Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Bongani Maqungwana said residents might take the law into their own hands if they found the suspect.

“Who has the guts to do that, treating a person like trash that deserves to be thrown in the bin?

“The community will definitely trace down the suspect if he is still around. When the community deals with you decisively, taking the law into their hands, it won't be nice.

“What is worse is that this is Women's Month and just last week our ladies made us proud by winning the Afcon cup and instead of showing love and appreciation to our women in the community, we brutally kill them like they don't deserve to live,” said Maqungwana.

Siyabulela Monakali, a spokesperson for anti-GBV group Ilitha labantu, said society was at war with women.

“When we look at the incidence of gender-based violence in our nation, it’s as if we are moving backwards as a country.

“Between the police and our judiciary they need to find ways or means of addressing the scourge of GBV,” said Monakali.
