The management of  Cape Town International Airport have confirmed a shooting took place shortly after 5am on Wednesday morning, on the upper roadway in front of the terminal building.

The airport recognised as the best airport in Africa by the  World Travel Awards Africa, had it’s drop and go section cordoned off following the incident.

Airport General Manager Deon Cloete said the shooting scene has been cordoned off while investigations continue.

“Several shots were fired and one person was hit by a stray bullet.

"Paramedics and the police attended the scene immediately. The injured person was stabilised before being taken to hospital,” said Cloete.

He said the airport operations are continuing as normal and that flights have not been affected.

A 50 year old man was shot and another person inside the terminal was hit by a stray bullet in what was alleged to be a gang related incident.

Unconfirmed reports at this stage indicate that the man injured was suspected gang leader Jerome "Donkie" Booysen, in what would be a third attempt on his life this year.

SAPS spokesperson Vish Naidoo said: "It was a passenger that was dropped off at the drop and go. He was shot at and was wounded in his upper body."

"Our investigators are at the scene at the moment and the victim's identity cannot be revealed at the moment."

Naidoo said the drop-and-go facility would be closed while investigations took place at the scene but the Airports Company had made alternative arrangements for travellers.
