Cape Town - Authorities say they are making good progress in containing a fire on the Old Du Toits Kloof Pass close to the Protea Farm.

Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto said by 4.30pm on Monday, CWDM Fire Services confirmed that together with their partners, CapeNature, they had made good progress on the fire on the Old Du Toits Kloof Pass.

Earlier on Monday, authorities said the fire, which sparked as a result of an accident between a truck and a motorbike, was causing a lot of smoke.

CWDM Fire Services had a total of 28 crew made up of firefighters and ground crews, assisted by three fire vehicles as well as personnel and vehicles from CapeNature, on the scene.

“According to CWDM fire officials, the teams are working hard and hoping to contain the fire within the next few hours.

“Teams will, however, continue with active firefighting, monitoring and mopping-up activities throughout the night,” Otto said.

The old pass remains closed to allow for authorities to complete accident-related tasks.

The tollgates and Huguenot Tunnel are open.

The blaze comes just days after authorities contained a fire, also in the Du Toits Kloof Pass area, on the slopes above the N1 just after the Rawsonville weighbridge.

About 60 firefighters responded to the scene and were aided by cooler evening air.
