A 21-year-old was killed when the car she and two friends were in hit a traffic sign then veered into a tree in Dock Road next to the One and Only Hotel at the V&A Waterfront early yesterday.

Although relatives have identified her, police had not released her name last night.

She was a passenger in a friend’s BMW heading home after a night out at the Waterfront, said news photographer Leon Knipe who was on the scene shortly after the crash.

“By the look of the car, speed definitely played a role. It was a wreck,” he said.

The road has a 60km/h speed limit. Knipe said her two friends were injured and taken to the Vincent Pallotti Hospital.

Health Department Forensic Pathology spokesman Zolani Zenzile said the body was identified by the family yesterday and a post mortem would be done later this week.
