On October 11, the Department of Environmental Affairs issued an Environmental Authorisation for a large nuclear plant to be built at Koeberg (Duynefontein), which is 26km north of Cape Town.

If you made any submission during any of the four public participation processes, it is crucial that you indicate that you wish to appeal against this finding.

To do this, simply send an e-mail to [email protected] and to [email protected] in which you say you intend to appeal the authorisation for a nuclear power station at Duynefontein, reference number 12/12/20/994.

The price of a participative democracy is participation – please find a few minutes to do this. The deadline is tomorrow.

Simply by sending notice of intention to appeal, the process is put on hold for a further 30 days.

If you do not send such a notice, you indicate that you agree with the authorisation, that your objections or questions during the public participation process have been adequately dealt with, and that you are happy for the nuclear plant to be built.

Optionally, you may also request a longer period than 30 days to formulate an appeal, due to the complexity of the issue and the number of pages of documents that may need to be studied.

You can read a little more about this authorisation, and why it is deeply flawed, here: https://koebergalert.org/2017/10/19/cape-town-nuclear-build-approved-by-dept-environment/

Over the next week or two, I will send you further information about how to best word an effective appeal.
