As thousands of athletes gear up for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, national and international runners gathered for the lighting of the Peace Torch yesterday.

The event is a peace event and as such one of the marathon’s key objectives is to leverage change through its Run4Change Legacy Programme.

The torch represents the promotion of global peace, friendship, harmony and understanding in all aspects of life and focuses on the Olympic values including courage, inspiration, determination, respect, friendship, equality and excellence.

The race is preceded by a sold-out Cape Times breakfast tomorrow where former Springbok rugby captain Francois Pienaar, Proteas all-rounder JP Duminy and other captains of industry will share why they decided to Run4Change.

On Sunday the torch will be lit outside The Waterclub and handed over to Pienaar, who will then carry it to the starting podium. It will be handed over to race ambassador Elana van Zyl-Meyer.
