MTN 8 champions Cape Town City went on a parade around the CBD on Thursday to thank supporters in the Mother City.

Benni McCarthy claimed his first major trophy as a coach when the Urban Warriors clinched their first MTN8 title after defeating SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban two weeks ago.

McCarthy has the distinction of winning the MTN8  trophy as a player and coach. He won it with Orlando Pirates on his return from Europe, where he played for, among others, Porto and Blackburn Rovers.

Mayor Patricia de Lille met the team at City Hall on their victory parade and called on fans to come out and show their support for the team, the SABC reported.

The team started their parade in Darling Street in front of City Hall, where De Lille formally congratulated them.

The team drove through various streets of the city centre before heading off to further-flung areas, including Langa, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha.

I’m really proud of our #MTN8 Champions and Cape Town’s own @CapeTownCityFC for bringing football glory to our City. Join the bus tour as they celebrate across the city this afternoon. pic.twitter.com/OUJQW7U5w4
