The new AB de Villiers? There is an Athlone youngster who kept the scoreboard ticking when he smashed 202 runs off 62 balls, securing a win for the Primrose Hub team.

Kieran Bowers, 12, is believed to be the answer to De Villiers’s recent retirement from the game.

“It feels amazing. I can’t believe it actually happened. I didn’t know I was the fastest person. I just focused and my coach kept telling me what score I’m on so I felt the pressure. Normally, if they tell me what score I’m on, I’d go out the next ball.

“This makes me want to train more. You could be born with talent but you need to train because you don’t just get it on a silver platter,” Kieran said.

His coach Shaheed Adonis said: “AB de Villiers was the best I’ve seen internationally and Kieran is the answer to AB who has just retired.”

Bowers is in Grade 7 at St Joseph’s Marist College.

He has been playing cricket since the age of 5 and now plays for the Primrose Cricket Hub, as well as Primrose Cricket Club. His goal is to be a batsman for the Proteas.
