Cape Town – A total of 280 players from 32 countries will be taking part in the 2018 Five A Side Football World Championships at Fives Futbol at Century City at the weekend.

This will be the fifth edition of the biggest amateur football tournament in the world.

Fives Futbol chief executive Adam Fine said South Africa said the tournament has previously been held in countries such as Dubai, Thailand and China.

Fine said the fast-paced five-a-side soccer format, which is contested over 20 minutes, has been booming internationally over the last decade.

This year's championship kicked off at the beginning of the year, with half-a-million players from more than 60 countries competing in knockout games in a six-month qualifying league.

“Not only do we believe that having the opportunity to host will be a big boost for the sport locally, but an opportunity to use the game as a platform to showcase our wonderful country to the world,” said Fine.

The games will start from noon on Saturday and from 5pm on Sunday. Entrance is free and spectators can expect action-packed entertainment both on and off the pitch.
