Durban -  The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda has  welcomed the life sentences handed to three men convicted for the murder of a KZN policeman.

Sabelo Mkhize, 28, Lindokuhle Mchunu and Sboniso Khubisa, both 22, were convicted of 12 charges which included murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

The Durban High Court sentenced the trio to life imprisonment for the murder of Sergeant
Vusmuzi Moyana and attempted murder of Sergeant Jabu Jojisa who worked at the Inanda SAPS.

Kaunda hailed the judgement as a clear indication that government will not tolerate any  forms of crime, particularly the killing of police officers who he said are the "only shield between law  abiding citizens and heartless criminals."

“This must teach all criminals that as government we are not going to allow criminals to  terrorise communities without any consequences.

"This ruling signifies, indeed, that we are  declaring a war against all forms crime”, he said.

The MEC added that he was pleased that law enforcement and the judiciary have ensured that the  full might of the law was applied in this case and they will continue to work together to  affirm the safety of the community.
