The creativity of a Durban University of Technology graduate has catapulted him to the top three in a television design and decor reality show.
Sifiso Shange stands to scoop the top prize in the Win A Home Show; The Design Edition.
The SABC3 show is a double whammy, running a competition for viewers to win a home while interior designers also compete.
Speaking to the Daily News this week, Shange said he was honoured to have made it to the finale, having only obtained his degree in interior design last year. “I have worked hard, but I know it’s God who’s in the driver’s seat.”
Last week, the 24-year-old was featured with the two other finalists on the lifestyle television show Top Billing. “I never imagined that a hood-boy would feature on such a show,” Shange said.
What he had imagined, was creating clothing, products and furniture, under the brand Phezulu Power. “The name says it all. It’s an acknowledgement of a greater force, a higher power guiding me.”
Although Shange always had a flare for drawing and making things, as the first-born of three children, his parents wanted him to go into the medical field.
A friend convinced him not to let his talent go to waste and they enrolled for the Foundation Programme at DUT’s Faculty of Arts and Design.
“I chose interior design because I wanted to create beautiful places.“
Soon after starting work at an architectural firm in Johannesburg, Shange was back home to take part in the show, which was shot in Durban.
They had to design a room from concept to completion in three days.
“I was comfortable because I was in my home town with family and friends close by for support, the design process felt more natural,” Shange said.
The finale will be aired on Friday night.
