Project Runningblade has set a land speed record for lawn-mowers even though it wasn't quite the target of 100mph (160km/h).

Don Wales took his Kawasaki-engined Countax ride-on machine to more than 87mph to top the previous record of 80.792mph set by Bob Cleveland on a home-built lawnmower in 2006 on the Bonneville salt flats.

Wales set his first record on Pendine Sands on the coast of Wales on Saturday at 86.069mph after cutting the grass outside Pendine's Museum of Speed.

He hit the Carmarthen Bay sand again on Sunday and took the mower to 87.833mph to not only enter his name in the record books for the ninth time but also raised significant funds for the Wessex Heartbeat charity that supports a cardiac centre in England.
