The return of the iconic Challenger, Dodge says, brings what pony car fanatics crave: ground-shaking performance, design recalling the original car, world-class ride and handling and benchmark braking.

On top of that it has a wide variety of modern amenities and technology designed to delight a new generation of driving enthusiasts. Performance targets include 0-100km/h in the low five-seconds.

"The all-new Dodge Challenger SRT8 has been engineered to give customers everything they want in a modern muscle machine," said Chrysler's Mike Accavitti. "The new version of Dodge's American classic has tyre-smoking performance and head-turning design with a wide array of state-of-the-art technology.

"That include satnav, 'Keyless Go' entry, an infotainment system and hands-free communications."

The Challenger SRT8 car was developed by Chrysler's in-house performance engineering organisation to have the five pillars of every SRT vehicle, Chrysler says: bold exterior design that resonates with the brand image, a race-inspired interior, world-class ride and handling across a dynamic range, a stand-out power train and benchmark braking.

Dodge will offer the limited-edition 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 in three colours: orange, silver metallic and black. Each two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupe will be produced with a numbered dash plaque and hood stripes and will be powered by SRT's 6.1-litre HEMI V8 capable of 312kW and 569Nm.

The cars will be in American showrooms only for about $37 000 a pop but the All-American Muscle Car, as it is billed will actually be assembled in… Canada.
