Chrysler UK has released prices for the 2007 Dodge Nitro SUV that will be launched almost simultaneously in South Africa - that will be in June.

Chrysler UK's MD Peter Lambert said: "In a world of mostly bland competitors the Nitro has the design and performance to shake up the mid-size SUV market.

"It has excellent overall performance, competitive fuel economy and a comprehensive range of features that includes the new 'Load 'n Go' rear-floor cargo system."

The Dodge Nitro will be available in the UK with either a petrol or diesel engine but all-wheel drive will be standard both there and in South Africa.

- The petrol option (£23 490) will be a 3.7-litre, SOHC V6 for which Dodge quotes 152kW and 315Nm, available only as an auto.

- The diesel will be a 2.8-litre, common-rail, turbocharged, four-cylinder available with a six-speed manual or five-speed auto transmission and priced from £18 990-£23 490 (R273 000-R338 000).

This engine claims 130kW and 460Nm on an average fuel consumption of 9.4 litres/100km.

SA will get the petrol V6 but the diesel option is apparently still under discussion.

SA prices will be announced at the local launch.
