The controversial new road traffic act and points demerit system has been postponed yet again.

Johannesburg and Tshwane have piloted the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act - without the demerit system - for several months and it was to have been rolled out countrywide during 2010 but its scheduled introduction in Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay and Cape Town at the beginning of July has been postponed due to problems with the system.

A new date has yet to be announced by the department of transport and the Road Traffic Management Corporation but an RTMC spokesman said this should be finalised by the end of August 2010.

He said: "It will still be within the financial year ending March 31, 2011. After the system has been running smoothly at all municipalities for a few months we will begin applying the demerit points." - INL Motoring

What do you think? Can the Aarto system be made to work or is it still "a bridge too far?
