It's the dream vehicle of most adventure tourists - a camper based on a go-anywhere Mercedes-Benz Unimog chassis and one that can be ordered from South Africa.

This particular one will be on display at Abenteuer & Allrad 2010, Europe's biggest off-road vehicle show, in Bad Kissingen, Germany from June 3-6.

A U4000 is an ideal expedition vehicle; it has unmatched ground clearance thanks to its portal axles and its coil-spring suspension with torque tubes and transverse links allows as much as 30 degrees of axle articulation.

The mechanical bits are waterproof, the air intake level with the cabin roof (giving it 1.2m fording ability) and it has single rear tyres, as opposed to the twin tyres of the all-wheel drive trucks most overlanders use, for better traction and lower rolling resistance.

The tyre pressure monitoring system can be used to reduce pressures from the driver's seat on the move, so as not to get bogged down on soft ground.

It has a 160kW, 4249cc four-cylinder diesel with permanent all-wheel drive, high and low range and differential locks on front and rear axles, fed by a 290-litre main fuel tank plus two 20-litre reserve canisters.

And if you do manage to get it stuck, it can pull itself out of the mud with its hydraulic seven-ton front winch, although Unimog drivers say they mostly use their winches to pull other vehicles out of difficult situations!

The Bocklet camper body is made of glass-reinforced composite with a tough 2mm thick fabric-reinforced outer layer. It's 4.35m long, 2.2m wide and 1.95m high inside and all the doors and windows have hollow rubber seals and multi-point locks to help keep out dust and water.

There's a bathroom behind the driver's seat with a cassette toilet, wash basin and shower and a 10-litre combined gas/electric boiler provides plenty of hot water. Behind that there's a corner kitchen with a two-burner gas stove, sink and drainer.

A lockable passage leads to the cab with a cupboard and a 110-litre fridge behind the front passenger seat.

Benches upholstered with alcantara provide seating for four, with tanks and more storage under the floor. The camper carries 300 litres of fresh water and has a 200-litre waste tank.

At the back there's a 200 x 135cm double bed over yet more storage, which can be accessed from outside.

There's a diesel-powered heater for winter nights, 220Ah of battery capacity backed up by a 260W solar panel, an automatic 24V/50A charger and a 1.2kW inverter. A flat-screen TV, satellite dish and DVD player keep you entertained and informed no matter where you are.

The Bocklet camper is 6.85m long overall, 2.35m wide and 3.5m high. It costs from R1.7-million to R1.9-million in South Africa, depending on just how much luxury you ask for.
