A small violent group of protesters blocked traffic in Coedmore Road, Bellair, in south Durban, on Friday.

Police said the protesters dragged tyres and timber into the street and set them on fire.

They prevented vehicles from passing.

The blockade was at the N2 underpass.

A policeman at the scene said when a car tried to force its way through, it was scratched and damaged.

No one was hurt.

The protest, which started at about 4am, was said to have involved graveyard dwellers, who wanted the government to provide housing.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said the protest – involving about 50 people – was peaceful and no serious damage had been reported.

‘Police are monitoring the situation,’ he said.
