Durban - A policeman stationed at Durban Central Police Station and a security guard were shot on Tuesday afternoon during a shootout with would be cash in transit robbers at Durban’s Workshop.

Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said that at 3.30pm, at near the Workshop shopping centre on Commercial Street, a security guard was coming from the premises of a business after collecting cash when he was shot at by an unknown number of suspects.

"Police officers that were in the vicinity conducting an investigation witnessed the incident. The police officer managed to grab a suspect that was carrying the money box and the box fell to the ground. The suspects opened fire at the police officers and a police Constable stationed at Durban Central was shot on the abdomen," she said.

Muridili said a security guard was also shot on the abdomen.

"Both victims were rushed to hospital for medical attention. The money box was recovered at the scene. The suspects left empty handed in their getaway vehicle. Charges of attempted cash-in-transit robbery and attempted murder have been registered at SAPS Durban Central".

Rescue Care Paramedics responded to the call ,spokesperson Kyle van Reene said at approximately 16h00 paramedics responded to a call for a shooting incident near a popular shopping mall in Dr A.B Xuma Street, Durban central.

“On arrival on scene a male police officer was found to have suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was in a serious condition. Advanced Life Support Emergency Care Practitioners worked to stabilize the man whilst he was rushed to a nearby hospital for further immediate definitive care. Reports from the scene indicate the police member took fire from a number of armed suspects during an attempted cash in transit robbery. The South African Police Services will be investigating the matter further”.

The Daily News has information from a source that there were possibly three suspects and that four shots were fired.

It’s also alleged that the suspects were armed with automated weapons.
