Durban - A drug bust by the Durban Metro Police Crime Prevention team led to the recovery of 20000 whoonga capsules packed in little plastic bags and R250000 in cash from a house on Booth Avenue in Overport on Sunday.

The estimated street value of each whoonga capsule is R20, which would mean the capsules found were worth R400000.

The team of three, led by Acting Superintendent Deon Perumal, acted swiftly after being tipped off about the suspicious house.

Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the Crime Prevention team acted upon information about a drop-off that was going to happen at the house.

The people found living in the home was a 52-year-old-man and two women aged 39 and 22.

“The team also found ammunition in the house but were not able to locate the firearms,” said Sewpersad.

The bust comes after the arrest of an alleged whoonga kingpin by the collective work of the Durban Metro police officers, Police from the drug, firearm and gang unit and Public Order Police last month.

Whoonga has also been associated with the spike in crimes including robberies, theft and burglaries in places where the drug is available.
