DURBAN - AT LEAST four pedestrians died at the weekend in KwaZulu-Natal after being hit by cars in separate accidents.

The latest incident took place on Sunday where a police source, not authorised to speak to the media, told the Daily News that a driver had been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of liquor after he had hit and killed a female pedestrian near the Loskop off-ramp in Estcourt.

She was knocked over by a vehicle whose driver had reportedly lost control of the vehicle. According to the officer, the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, and the driver was charged with culpable homicide and drunk driving.

“The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital.”

On Saturday, three pedestrians in Osizweni, Newcastle, died in two separate accidents.

According to KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services, the initial car crash involved a vehicle knocking a cow where one person was fatally injured. The community had rushed to the scene, and while clearing it two people were hit by another passing vehicle.

“Three pedestrians sustained fatal injuries following two separate crashes at the same scene,” confirmed spokesperson Robert Mckenzie.

Police have yet to respond to queries about the incidents.
