Durban - THE Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) has revealed it was not aware of any possible charges that could be made against its registrar/CEO Dr David Motau when it appointed him in June this year.

In a media statement issued yesterday, HPCSA president Professor Simon Nemutandani said the council noted the former acting health minister Mmamoloko Kubayi's decision to suspend Dr Motau.

"We fully support the organs of state in the execution of their duties.

“Dr Motau's arrest relates to his tenure as a head of department of health at the Free State province."

The HPCSA said it would provide updates should there be further developments on the matter. Last week Kubayi placed Dr Motau on precautionary suspension with immediate effect.

"The decision follows the department’s receipt of a notice of arrest against Dr Motau, in relation to serious allegations of fraud and corruption during his tenure as the head of the Free State Department of Health," Kubayi said in a statement.

"His precautionary suspension is necessitated by the seriousness of the allegations and its ramification to ethical dynamics in the health fraternity."
