DURBAN - The Estcourt Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit has been applauded by the SAPS for doing an exceptional job and treating every little piece of evidence with caution, which led to the successful conviction and sentencing of an 18-year-old man who raped his three nephews and niece aged between 7 and 9.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said last month the Estcourt FCS unit secured a sentence of 80 years’ imprisonment for the accused.

The Estcourt Regional Court sentenced the accused to 20 years’ imprisonment for each count. The sentences will run concurrently.

“It is alleged that the accused would call the victims to his room one by one and rape them. The mother of one of the victims overheard her son narrating his ordeal to his older brother and intervened. The victims were questioned and they all confirmed being raped by their uncle. Four counts of rape were opened for investigation and the uncle was arrested. He was remanded in custody until he was sentenced,” Mbele said.

Meanwhile, through the work of the Estcourt FCS unit, last week the Estcourt Regional Court sentenced 44-year-old Muziwenkosi Mzunkunzi Nkala to life imprisonment for raping the woman who refused his love proposal.

During investigations, police found that Nkala might also be linked to the alleged rape of a 58-year-old woman in her home in the Bhalonini area in April 2020.
