DURBAN – Action South Africa (ActionSA) in KwaZulu-Natal laid charges of assault and intimidation against an Umlazi councillor accused of torching a district voting station in section F, uMlazi last week and who allegedly assaulted someone from the community.

ActionSA KZN leader and mayoral candidate Dr Makhosi Khoza and her supporters went to the uMlazi police station on Thursday to open a case against the councillor.

Last Thursday, it is alleged that the councillor assaulted a resident while threatening others who tried to prevent him from burning the voting district station because he did not want to be contested within the ward.

Khoza said her party will not tolerate political intimidation and threatening of the community.

“We have met with the leadership at the uMlazi police station to ensure that risk assessment in the areas identified as hotspots are done so that we do not encounter criminals who intimidate people from voting for parties.

“The police have assured us that they will take action and ensure that everyone votes freely,” Khoza said.

Colonel Zweli Mkhize confirmed that the police were investigating the matter.

He said this was the second case opened.

“We are currently in the process of issuing a case number, but I can confirm that a case was opened by the ActionSA leader in uMlazi.”

ActionSA’s eThekwini spokesperson Busisiwe Gadebe said that while many parties in eThekwini had not publicly declared who their mayoral candidates were, her party had, in the spirit of accountability, decided to forward Khoza’s name as the next mayor should the party get the required number to govern the city.

“ActionSA is committed to serving the people of eThekwini hence, we have come out and named our mayoral candidate so that they know what to expect from us,” said Gadebe.
