Durban - A hijacker is under police guard at a local hospital after a daring shootout with police in Welbedacht near Chatsworth on Tuesday. 

 A shootout between suspected carjackers and police has resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old suspect, said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele

Police together with other law enforcement agencies acted on information of a vehicle taken during a carjacking in Durban Central.

"The police officers spotted the vehicle travelling along Imbovu Road in Welbedacht East which was being followed by another vehicle. The suspects detected the police approaching and a shoot-out ensued," she said

One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard. 

The other suspects fled into the dense bush and are still being sought by police

"The vehicle was recovered.  Police seized the second vehicle believed to be used in the commission of the crime. Two police vehicles were damaged during the shootout," Mbele said  

The arrested suspect is due to appear in the Durban Magistrates court on charges of carjacking, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
