Durban - Barely a week after a woman was robbed of her handbag she was shot dead outside her home in Coroavoca, north of Durban on Monday.

The woman was the personal assistant of Newlands East, eThekwini ward 11, ANC councillor Joyce Johnson, since 2016.

On Wednesday she had been held up by two men in the councillors office on Marble Ray Drive.

She also had a tuckshop outside her home.

On Monday night, Johnson said, she had been serving a customer who could not make up his mind what he wanted.

The customer had ordered soap, tea bags and other items.

The secretary then asked her husband to lend a phone so she could calculate the cost of the goods.

Johnson said the husband heard a bang and the man fled without taking anything.

The bullet grazed a child that was playing nearby.

Captain Nqobile Gwala, a KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, said that at 17:40, a 42-year-old woman was at her business premises in Quarry Heights when two unknown men entered the premises under the pretence of purchasing goods.

"The men opened fired, fatally wounding the woman and wounding a seven-year-old girl on the chest. She was taken to hospital for medical attention,"Gwala said.

A distraught Johnson said police will investigate if the two incidents were linked.
