DURBAN - The ANC in eThekwini said it would speed up the sitting of branch meetings so that the region could hold its long-awaited conference next week.

The regional task team co-ordinator, Bheki Ntuli, told the Daily News on Sunday that the party managed to sit four branches during the week and many were expected to sit and nominate on Sunday afternoon.

Ntuli whose position is equivalent to secretary said the party needs just over 20 branches to reach the threshold of 78 branches which is required by party constitution to form a quorum. In total eThekwini has 111 branches and is the biggest region in the country.

“We are still on course for our conference to sit on Monday next week. We want to get done with the conference after we were delayed by Covid-19 and local government elections. We are hoping by the end of today (Sunday) we will know whether we will be able to go to the conference next Monday,” said Ntuli.“

He is on Thabani Nyawose’s slate as secretary, a position he held under Zandile Gumede while she was still chairperson before the structure was disbanded by the provincial leadership.

Nyawose and Gumede are vying for the all powerful chairperson position in eThekwini.

The win for Nyawose is expected to boost President Cyril Ramaphosa’s chances of returning to his position as president of the party in the conference that is expected to be held in December next year, while Gumede’s victory would strengthen the radical economic transformation group’s chances.
