Durban – Two weeks later and Birchwood Park water is now safe to drink.

That was the announcement made by the eThekwini Municipality on Monday after it had initially warned residents to take precautionary measures when using tap water.

Municipal communication head Lindiwe Khuzwayo confirmed that Birchwood Park water was now safe for human consumption after recent water tests indicated the water quality was within acceptable standards.

“Repairs to water infrastructure have been completed and specialists conducted follow-up tests to ascertain the quality of water. The results confirmed that the water is safe for consumption,” Khuzwayo said.

The municipality thanked the Birchwood Park community for their patience while the matter was being resolved.

For more information regarding water supply, the public can contact the toll-free number 080 311 1111 or use the eThekwini Water and Sanitation WhatsApp number 073 1483 477. Alternatively, email: [email protected]

At the end of July, the municipality issued a public notice after test results indicated that potable water in Birchwood Park was not of good quality.

Residents were urged to first boil it for a minute to make it safe for consumption.

The municipality had isolated the reservoir with a team flushing the pipes as part of sanitation processes.

Interruption to the water supply was also expected in the area while remedial work was under way.

The municipality assured residents that water quality across the rest of the city was not affected. They continued to monitor drinking water according to the International Standard Organisation 17025 in accredited laboratories.
