Durban - Mayor Zandile Gumede came under attack from DA councillors and members of the public on Friday after pictures of her wearing ANC regalia and canvassing people in Mayville to register to vote was uploaded onto the city's Facebook page.

The charge was led by DA councillor, Martin Meyer who called out the mayor for using ratepayer resources to campaign for the ANC.

The Facebook post on the city's page said: "EThekwini Mayor and the city leadership encouraged the community of Mayville and surroundings to register to vote. Final registration weekend 26&27 January. #Regweekend #xse2019".

Martin, who encouraged his Facebook followers to go onto the city's Facebook page to complain said: " So now the official eThekwini fb page is being used to promote ANC events. The mayor is here acting in her capacity as an ANC member (note the shirts) and not as the Mayor and it is unacceptable that this is posted on the municipal page.  The separation between state and party is a vital one and one the ANC just never understood. Please visit the post on the eThekwini page and tell them that we as residents don't want party political posts on a page that is for all residents of our city".

The post on the city's Facebook page saw several people complain about the mayor's voter registration drive.

The eThekwini Municipality had not responded to questions from the Daily News at the time of publishing.
