DURBAN - Former president Jacob Zuma supporters were expected to gather at his Nkandla home on Thursday afternoon to thank him for ensuring that eThekwini Municipality remained in the ANC.

The visit was organised by party councillors from eThekwini who were also expected to hand over a bull to the former president thanking him for his role in keeping the city under the party.

Supporters’ leader, councillor Ntando Khuzwayo, told the Daily News that they were on their way to Nkandla and they expected to arrive any time soon, adding that they would present the former president with a bull as a gift from eThekwini ANC councillors.

“There is no formality; it’s just a courtesy visit by us eThekwini councillors. We felt we must go and visit him as our leader,” said Khuzwayo.

It was reported that the former president played a major role in swaying Abantu Batho Congress leader, Philani Mavundla, to help the party retain the city by bringing a bloc of small parties to rescue the ANC from the DA and IFP coalition.

Mavundla himself confirmed to the media that he was approached by Zuma, Dr Zweli Mkhize and other senior leaders to vote with the ANC in eThekwini.

ANC provincial spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela distanced the provincial leadership, saying the visit was an initiative by eThekwini councillors alone.
