Durban — Five people were killed on Sunday evening when a car and bakkie collided head-on on the R34 in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance service spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics responded to reports of a crash on the R34 Melmoth road between the Mondlo and Klipfontein turn-offs.
Botha said that when emergency services arrived, they found that a bakkie and car had been involved in a head-on collision.
“Sadly, five occupants of the car succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived,” Botha said.
One person sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo at 7pm Vryheid police were called to an accident scene on R34 next to Klipton Dam, on arrival they noticed that two vehicles were involved in an accident.
“Three females and two males were declared dead on the scene whilst the other people were rushed to hospital for medical attention. A case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation,” Ngcobo said.
