DURBAN - FOUR men are due in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the alleged murder of a Phoenix man in Durban.

Tyran Eston Moodley, 23, was found at Kidstone Place with stab wounds on Friday.

A source close to the matter said Moodley had been socialising with friends in Wellham Road when an argument broke out. It is alleged Moodley and a friend, Tariq Shaik, ran off pursued by others, but he tripped and fell and was assaulted with a stick and stabbed several times with a knife while his friend Shaik was unharmed.

Moodley died on the roadside before paramedics could arrive. He had moved to Pietermaritzburg after his mother died six months ago but had returned to Phoenix after his friend promised him a job making furniture.

He lived temporarily with Farouk Ismail Shaik and his family in Phoenix.

Shaik said his son Tariq and Moodley were leaving a block of flats after an argument broke out. Tariq said Moodley was behind him as they fled via a pathway.

“I looked back, saw four guys chasing us and I saw Tyran stumble and fall. He was my best friend.”

Shaik said they all knew one another and he could not understand why an argument had to turn fatal.

“Moodley was like a son to my wife and I. We took care of him. We want justice for what happened to an innocent, harmless person. He was job hunting. They must rot in jail. Tariq could have died and for what reason?”

Moodley’s aunt Ravis Naidoo said he left Pietermaritzburg in mid-December after his friend promised him employment assembling furniture.

“The job did not materialise and his friend kept shifting the date but Moodley remained steadfast and also tried looking for other means of employment.”

Naidoo said the family were left devastated and were trying to wrap their heads around what transpired.

“We are waiting for police to conclude their investigations. We are hearing different versions.”

Once the post-mortem is done they will arrange the funeral date, she said.

The Phoenix police station crime prevention team led by Warrant Officer Lashlan Ramalu followed up on leads and arrested four men. Police had recovered one of the weapons.
