Durban - A man was shot and injured during a political gathering in Cato Crest on Sunday.

Lindokuhle Mnguni, a spokesperson for Abahlali baseMjondolo, called it an armed attack at the eKhanana Land Occupation in Cato Crest.

Mnguni said the attack took place while they were launching their branch and celebrating a victory that had resulted in a recent court victory over them being allowed to stay on a section of land at Cato Crest.

"While comrades were putting up the tent, Siyabonga Mngadi was shot by an unknown person who just arrived and started shooting wildly at our members. He is in hospital at the moment. Two weeks ago another comrade was shot dead at the same occupation. We don't know who is responsible for these shootings," Mnguni said.

The comrades on the eKhanana Land Occupation in Cato Crest have fought a hard and a brave struggle for land said Mnguni.

"Our position remains that land must be allocated on the basis of social need and not on a commercial or party political basis. We remain committed to land reform from below via the democratic self-organisation and mobilisation of the oppressed," Mnguni added.

Cato Manor police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
