Durban  - The suburb of Reservoir Hills has been hit by home invasions where cars, household appliances and jewellery were stolen from residents.

On Thursday, at midday, five men forced open the door of a home in Halpin Road. Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, a KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, said at gunpoint the men took cash, jewellery and cellphones before fleeing the scene.

Zwane said the home owner's firearm was also taken.

On Sunday night a family was held up in their Varsity Drive home. Zwane said the complainant was at his uncle house with his friends when a Blue BMW pulled off.

"Five men alighted the vehicle armed with firearms. The complainant ran inside the house. The robbers locked them in and demanded cash, cellphones and jewellery.  They fled the scene with the complainant’s vehicle.

Sydenham police station is investigating both robbery incidents.

A well-placed source with the Reservoir Hills Community Policing Forum said the area was hit hard with robberies in March.

This included the death of a navy officer in Kies Avenue. The officer was shot dead during a hijacking.
