DURBAN – A KwaZulu-Natal councillor is among three suspects who were arrested for being allegedly involved in three murders and seven attempted murders over the past five months.

The arrests came as police gathered intelligence about the whereabouts of the three suspects on a mission dubbed “Project Izimpisi 3”. The men were arrested at uMlazi, Isipingo and Mid-Illovo.

“An intelligence-driven operation was conducted on Tuesday by the eThekwini District Task Team, Crime Intelligence together with other law enforcement agencies which produced positive results when they arrested three wanted suspects,” police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.

One suspect was still on the run, she said.

They face seven counts of attempted murder, three counts of murder and three counts of malicious damage to property.

Mbele said the suspects allegedly attacked a Mid-Illovo family, one of whom was elected as a ward candidate in the area. Out of fear, the Mid-Illovo family moved to different parts of the province, but were later located by the suspects.

“Fearing for their lives the family left the area and went into hiding in different areas in Durban. The suspects located the family members in Sydenham, uMlazi and Camperdown and attacked them, demanding that they reveal the whereabouts of the ward councillor candidate. When the family refused to disclose his whereabouts the suspects fired multiple shots, injuring seven and killing three people, before damaging their property,” said Mbele.

She said in the latest attack involving the men, two teenage victims were shot multiple times. The victims were hospitalised.

The SAPS said the three arrested suspects would appear in court soon.
