DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala and MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, are expected to lead a heightened Christmas Eve law enforcement operation.

The multi-disciplinary operation, which will be focusing on the enforcement of traffic regulations, assessing Covid-19 compliance in public transport and crime fighting will be held on the N2 in KwaDukuza on Friday.

Zikalala is also expected to share important developments in the province and enforcement statistics since the start of the festive season. He will also engage with motorists on the day.

In a statement, the KZN Provincial Government stated that this came as the province's preferred tourist destinations were already experiencing high volumes of traffic on busy transport corridors, including the N3 and N2.

“The operations are part of the provincial festive season plan which was launched by Premier Zikalala early this month in order to curb crime, crashes and road fatalities during the festive season and beyond,” the statement read.

On Wednesday, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula raised concerns about a spike in road crashes during the first half of the holiday season when he released the provisional festive season statistics.

He highlighted that a total of 2  639 drivers were arrested for offences ranging from drunk driving to excessive speeding and operating a vehicle without a driving licence. Meanwhile, 1 561 vehicles were discontinued and 1 820 impounded.
