KZN police unit achieves more convictions during 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

DURBAN – In the midst of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the KwaZulu-Natal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit has achieved more convictions.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said on Monday the Greytown Regional Court sentenced Mxolisi Sakhile Mbambo, 21, to 10 years imprisonment for rape.

Mbele said on November 12, 2020, around 4.30pm, a group of friends were drinking near the Nathi store in the Embulwane area when the accused suggested they take the party back to his house. Upon arrival at his homestead the accused offered everyone food and asked a 27-year-old woman to assist him to bring the food from inside. When they entered the room he closed the door, overpowered and raped her. She reported the incident and a case of rape was opened at Ematimatolo SAPS for investigation.

“On November 15, 2021, police received information of the whereabouts of the accused and the 21-year-old suspect was located and arrested on charges of rape,” Mbele said.

She said in another incident, on January 2, 2021, at 12pm, a 23-year-old woman was visiting her mother for the holidays in the Matini location. A friend of her mother’s was an electrician and her mother needed him to do some electrical work at her home. When the accused requested payment for the work he overpowered and raped her daughter. When she told her mom she was reluctant to believe her daughter but told her that she could report the incident to the police were she lives and studies in Nkandla.

“A case of rape was reported and transferred to Ematimatolo SAPS for investigation on January 16, 2021, the 45-year-old man was traced and arrested on March 4, 2021. The Greytown Regional Court sentenced Saziso Felix Ndawonde to life imprisonment on November 30, 2021, on charges of rape,” Mbele said.
