DURBAN - The Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit’s apprehension of Ntobeko Ali Magwaza, 32, ensured he was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for two counts of rape and eight years for two counts of kidnapping, by the Inkanyezi Regional Court in Eshowe, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Investigations had led the FCS Unit to KwaGalagala, where Magwaza was arrested and charged.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said Magwaza was friends with both rape and kidnapping victims, but betrayed their trust and turned into a monster when he kidnapped and raped them.

Gwala said the first incident was on June 25, 2016, at King Dinuzulu township in Eshowe, when Magwaza requested his 21-year-old friend to accompany him to his place of residence to fetch his jersey. She accompanied him.

“When they arrived at his home, he turned into a monster. He locked the door, assaulted the victim and dragged her into his bedroom where he raped her. The victim managed to escape through the window while Magwaza was asleep. She went to a nearby homestead and reported what happened,” Gwala said.

She said the incident was reported to the Eshowe police station and the docket was transferred to the Eshowe FCS for further investigation.

However, when Magwaza heard that the police were looking for him, he disappeared from the area.

Gwala said in 2018, Magwaza returned to the area and raped another friend of his at her home.

She said on December 15, 2018, at 1pm, the 30-year-old victim met up with Magwaza on the road at King Dinuzulu township.

“Magwaza took the victim’s house keys and when she demanded the keys back, he became aggressive and assaulted her. He instructed the victim to follow him to her place of residence, where he raped her. He then demanded food, and while he was enjoying the food, the victim’s mother arrived home. The accused escaped and went into hiding,” Gwala said.

She said Magwaza made several court appearances until he was convicted and sentenced to 28 years’ imprisonment for two counts each of rape and kidnapping.
