DURBAN - A Phoenix man is recovering in a Durban hospital from a gunshot wound after being shot in a house robbery on Monday.

The man and his family were held up in their Cradlen Gardens home in Phoenix just after 7.30pm. There were six adults and one child in the house when robbers pounced, a source said.

According to police reports, five robbers entered the house through the lounge and kitchen doors brandishing firearms.

The robbers demanded car keys, handbags and any items of value.

A relative who came to fetch his wife from the house was assaulted with a gun by one of the robbers. The robbers took five cell phones, a handbag with a wallet, cash and keys when they fled.

The 64-year-old homeowner allegedly walked out of the house to check on the robber's whereabouts.

The family, who were inside the house, heard three gunshots. They found the homeowner on the ground with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The robbers fled in a Volvo SUV and a white Toyota. Phoenix police are investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

According to private security company KZN VIP Unit, it is believed a White/Silver Toyota Etios, unknown registration, was used as the getaway vehicle.

“While the suspects were fleeing, they discharged two rounds of ammunition. One bullet grazed the homeowner. KZN VIP Medics were called in to stabilize and transport to hospital for further medical attention. The victim also sustained head injuries because he was assaulted with the butt of the firearm during the home invasion,” read a statement.
